Birthday Traditions in 10 Different Countries

The most common tradition is to blow candles on a cake, cut the cake, decorate the venue with balloons, eat and be merry! Here's how some of the countries around the world celebrate birthdays.

The birthday celebrations that you come across all over the world are all diverse and have something distinct in them that make them exceptional. It is a special event that is close to your heart and you can’t miss the surprise that your family and friends plan for you.

Some of the countries that celebrate birthdays in different ways are as follows.

Welsh Birthday

The birthday celebrations are quite different in Wales especially when a boy turns 21, he is thought to be mature and is given a key to know that he has the right to come and go out of the house according to his own will; he is even allowed to stay out of the house for as long as he likes. His parents would no longer monitor him as they used to. The boy is given a complete control of his own things. Giving keys is considered as an important tradition here.

Egyptian Birthday

This tradition is followed all around in the world as it the most common among most of the countries. The Egyptians like merry-making and therefore, they celebrate their birthdays by dancing and singing popular songs. Their birthdays are symbolized as a sign of life and growth by them and this is why there is a lot of fruit along with beautiful flowers on their parties. They are specially decorated with them and the guests invited also prefer bringing either the food items or the enchanting flowers as a gift for the birthday girl or the birthday boy to be a part of their celebrations.

Nigerian Birthday

Nigerians have an extremely different and interesting way to celebrate their birthday parties. They believe in inviting about a hundred guests or more than hundred guests on their parties to make it a time for a big celebration for them. A roasted cow or a goat is served with some special ingredients such as peppers, onions, sweet potatoes, rice, tomato and cassava to make it more delicious. All these things make up a dish called “Jollof rice”. Nigerians love feasting and the first fifteen birthday are really special for them.

Vietnamese Birthday

Though they are born on different days of a year, they prefer celebrating their birthdays on “Tet”. You might be wondering what it is? It is the first morning of the New Year. It doesn’t matter to them when they were born; they are only going to celebrate their birthdays on the same day. The birthday boys and girls are given a red envelope by their elders that have money in them to make them happy and encourage them on buying things on their own. The Vietnamese call this money as “Lucky Money”.

Irish Birthday

They are loving people who also like celebrating birthdays to show their love for their loved ones. When anyone has a birthday, that child is raised up by his friends and relatives so he or she can be lifted upside down and can be bumped lightly. The number of bumps is the same as that of his age; an extra bump to show the good luck for the child is also given. The event is a complete entertainment and everyone have fun.

Brazilian Birthday

This is the most unusual tradition you might have ever come across, maybe the funniest one. The people here pull the earlobes of the birthday child to wish him a very happy birthday. Giving small gifts especially to the kids is also a tradition of their birthday. The child wears a special dress on his or her birthday to show that it is a special day for him or her.

Cuban Birthday

People here praise music and dancing a lot, and they also like celebrating their birthday parties in a similar fashion. They sing birthday songs, put candles on the birthday cake according to the age of the kid, blow up balloons and burst piñatas. The presents are also given which are put around the bed of the child at night after he goes to sleep. He opens them up when he wakes up, the next morning. This is to surprise the kid so he can feel special and happier.

Korean Birthday

Korean celebrates it with their family members. The table is laid with four special items on the table. Those items are an eraser, a rubber, a thread and money. The baby is allowed to make a choice on his on. Choosing the item is associated with the future of the kid. Picking up an eraser means that he will be an outstanding student, picking up a pencil means that he will be really good with hands and if the child chooses money then he will be a wealthy man whereas, choosing the long thread means that he will have a long life.

Danish Birthday

The Danish celebrate their birthdays by placing the flag outside the windows to show that the birthday child lives here. Beautiful presents are bought for the child and the parents and relatives plan to put them around the bed of the child when he is sleeping so he can be surprised.

Ghanaian Birthday

People in Ghana are fond of their traditional birthday foods. They like eating watche, sheto, mecko, corn beef, red rice and their most special fufu on their birthdays. The guests look forward to all these dishes so they can enjoy the event enthusiastically. It is a tradition that they have been following for years. Ghanaians love feasts. Watche is prepared from beans and brown rice, whereas fufu is made from cassava and pounded yam. Ghanaians are food lovers and admire spicy food that enhances the taste of the food prepared by them.
